Well, maybe not BAD…but certainly keeping me off-kilter.
Bad enough to be a teenager these days, but to be one with ADHD means constantly fighting impulses, hormones AND your mom. And fight we do…particularly on days where I have to step on him.
Lately the argument has been over time spent on the Internet. He’s found a site with an interactive game that’s based on solving logic puzzles…sort of like the old, old Zork used to be, but more interesting. Integrates chat and other interactive features into it, which leaves him feeling compelled to spend all day and night on it, forgetting anything and anyone who may stand in the way of getting to the business of playing. To his chagrin, he discovered himself cut off this morning — just about everything on the Internet was available BUT that site, thanks to the miracle of port blocking.
Aggravating matters even more, he SAID he took his meds but by about 1:00 I knew as fact that he’d dismissed me with the most expedient method available — lie and tell her what she wants to hear — god forbid the truth might be told. So on the day goes….it’s so frustrating because he’s like his exact opposite when he gets like this — sullen, unavailable, and so passive-aggressive I’d like to throttle him.
One good thing though…He was invited to come and play for a local seniors swing band here (sounds scary, doesn’t it?). Yesterday was their first rehearsal and there is seriously no one under the age of 85 in this band. The lead sax player came up to him afterwards, introduced himself and told him that if he kept playing the way he did, he’d be as good as the bandleader HE played for — Buddy Rich. aka A’s Supreme God of Drumming. A couple of the trombone players had trouble remembering his name, and so dubbed him “Sticks”. They really enjoy him, and he enjoys them. It’s really amazing to see what a gap of a couple of generations can do for the people standing on both sides.
Tomorrow is another day. Perhaps we will be back in time again….today should just end up on the editing floor.
