Random Rambles

by Karoli on February 13, 2006

Dick Cheney shoots his hunting buddy…there’s not much more to say other than…What-ever. He may want to re-think his positions on campaign finance after this. Possibly gun control, too. ;-)

Does anyone understand the new figure skating scoring system? I’m still trying to understand how our US pair can hit a throw triple axel for the first time in any competition by any pair and end up in sixth…particularly when both Chinese pairs went off time in their spins. The Russians were awesome — they made sense. Others didn’t. If anyone understands the new scoring system, please leave a comment and explain it to me.

Michelle Kwan is a class act.

I suppose it would be bad form to say that it was 85 here today when everyone in the east is freezing and snowed in? Weird, bizarre weather. Santa Ana winds kicked up here today, blowing dry desert winds through. They always make me restless and apprehensive for some reason. Nothing reassuring about those winds at all.

Northern Voice 2006 sounds like it was awesome. I downloaded the recording of Nancy White’s presentation — (podcast and notes).

Swamphag (geez, that’s such a strange name for you!) blogged about it.

My daughter has school tomorrow and Sticks doesn’t. Sticks will be celebrating his 3.8 GPA (hot off the press) and exhausting schedule with a sleep-in lazy day. Kudos to Sticks for conquering the AP Chem and Honors Algebra classes with A’s in both.

Dancergirl is racing this weekend to get all the homework done and ready to turn in tomorrow. She’s still jetlagged from the trip and 8-hour time difference, but she got some awesome video, photos, and updated her blog . Interesting insight into her take on the competition — seems she knew intuitively before results came out that they hadn’t hit their stride.

I know, this is a bunch of random rambles, but it seems like another ‘tidbit night’ — nothing substantial but a few things interesting. Here’s to a wonderfully productive, peaceful week.

  • Donna, I saw a little bit of the Letterman show Monday...it's really is manna from heaven. Thanks for the nice comments! Sticks says thank you, too, as he informed me that he passed the pretest for AP Physics next year. I shudder at the very thought but he's looking forward to it. I was right -- he is smarter than me...LOL

  • Random comments to your random ramblings: Didja happen to catch Letterman and The Daily Show Monday night? Stuff like Cheney's hunting accident is the manna from heaven for comedy writers.

Nope, can't fathom the scoring for the skaters -- math makes my head hurt.

Congrats to Sticks on his awesome GPA! And welcome home to Dancergirl - that jet lag is bad. She must have enjoyed the warm weather (until today -- but it's still nicer than it must have been in Ireland).

Enjoyed your conversation with the authors of the blogging book!
  • Kmilyun,

Any luck? I did post a link to a Yale Statistics Prof's analysis (LOL!!!!), but I'm with you...2 aspirin and lots of questions later, I still don't get it.

    Swamphag,

I missed the opening ceremonies entirely -- first time in years I haven't seen it. Now that the Games are in full swing, though, it's practically required viewing here where the men control the remote. ;-)
  • My Olympic viewing is rather hit and miss. If I'm around and it's on, I'll watch, otherwise I miss it. And often I'm working while it's on so I'm not paying attention. So no help here with the scoring system; I missed the figure skating altogether! :-( I am aware there's some controversy and confusion out there.

Hey, was anyone else disappointed in the Opening Ceremonies? They've been breathtaking the last few times and these were..... meh. (A couple of good moments, like Pavarotti, but otherwise pretty mediocre.)

Re 'SwampHag'.... my sons would disagree. *LOL*
  • I see that I am not alone in the confusion with the new skating scoring system. I found the complete rules in PDF form, tried to read them but my head started hurting. I am glad that you recognize Michelle Kwan for being the class act that she is. Let me know if you figure the scoring system out. I am going to take to aspirin and try again in the morning.
