The sun was almost gone and there was very little light left for photos, much less photos with a long zoom. Still, the last rays were falling on a double-breasted cormorant in the ‘heron tree’, and it was pretty, so I was aiming for a photo of it when another cormorant came zooming toward the tree, full-tilt boogie. It was really windy and the cormorant was swept higher than it intended while landing (it was aiming for the branch below the heron’s nest), and plopped unceremoniously on the edge of the heron’s nest.
Mamacita Heron rose up from the nest like a volcano erupting with a mighty AWK-AWK, which had the desired effect on the cormorant — instant 180 and he was outa there for a second pass at the right branch. And me? I was just hanging on for the ride, trying to keep the camera steady and focused on the action. I got two out of about six that were worth keeping, and this one captures the climax of the confrontation.
…satisfied that the offender has been sent to the proper branch, Mamacita Heron proceeds to start smoothing her ruffled, rumpled feathers:
This series ALMOST makes up for not getting the red-tailed hawks yesterday. Almost.
