Sunday Randomness, again

Posted by Karoli in ADHD, Home, Parenting March 27th, 2006

It turned into a busier weekend than I’d thought it would be, and this is my last free one for about four weeks. So it’s a random, unfocused Sunday.

Coming Attractions

There’s lots of great topics sitting in my drafts, but they’re not close to being done, so here’s what’s coming up:

  • Response to Liz’ call for comments on the Overdiagnosis of ADHD
  • The dentistry update that didn’t make it to publication last week
  • On ADHD again: Thoughts about the negative reporting of a positive development - Last week’s FDA decision NOT to place black-box warnings on ADHD medications has been unanimously reported as the “FDA requiring stronger warnings”. Golly gee, no bias there!
  • The calendar update

On shyness

Liz, I often feel the same way. I’m far more confident with a computer screen than having to deal with face-to-face encounters. When I was a kid, I had no problem with asking the other kids to play but being a somewhat hyper sort, they found excuses to hang with others after a bit. That stays with me to this day.

On aging

My response to Molly’s post yesterday only brushed on what’s really been bothering me lately. I am not dealing well with the grinding fact of my own mortality these days. Losing my grandmother and good friend within 2 months of each other forced me to look in the mirror. Mammograms, colonoscopies and extensive dental reconstruction are now a fact of my life.

I do not like feeling as though doom hovers just around the corner. I’d just as soon deny it completely. My high school reunion is this summer and seeing the photos of people frozen in my mind as kids Stick’s age who now have grandkids is mind-blowing. I look in the mirror and don’t notice the little crows feet or fact that my jeans are a size larger than they were five years ago.

I want those days back when I felt immortal.

If only we could Photoshop ourselves away from the fact of aging.
