My neighbors on both sides of the lake think that I’m an obsessed nutcase, I’m sure. After all, they see me day after day aiming the zoom lens at trees, standing still and waiting, waiting, waiting…for what?
For me, the exercise has been to observe the nestlings when they finally emerge, which by my calendar should be within the next couple of weeks. Interestingly the heron activity has definitely ramped up over the past week, but no babies to show for it. A few of these

to whet my appetite and keep me interested, but those kids were staying well-hidden.
I was about to give up at about 6:20pm and head home, when behold! Look at who was looking back at me from the tree I most hate taking photos of — the lighting is terrible in this tree. Nevertheless, there it was, staring hard at me but letting me take photos. Unfortunately it was so dark by that time (by zoom lens standards anyway) that the photos are a bit grainy and softly focused. Hopefully this will be the first and not the last of the series, though….I feel like the vigilance may finally be paying off.
