Monday Minutiae

by Karoli on April 18, 2006

It’s still Monday in Maui, and I missed last week’s “What is this doing in my house Monday“, so here’s this weeks’ entry:

Tibetan Singing Bowl

Got a guess as to what this is? Hint: It isn’t a tool for smashing spices.

Still don’t know? Hint #2: It’s one of Sticks’ most prized possessions.

Give up?

It’s a Tibetan Singing Bowl. If you place the stick (for lack of the actual term) inside the bowl and pull it around the rim evenly and carefully it creates the most amazing tone you’ve ever heard. It will fill the house. He has a singing bell, too, that will not only fill the house, it fills the neighbor’s houses, and the birds even react across the lake!

It’s in my living room along with the Thai gong and singing bell because there is no place special enough for it in Sticks’ room, or so he says. I don’t mind, because it really is lovely. So lovely I may decide I should keep it for him until he’s much, much older. My mom gave it to him for Christmas, after searching high and low for just the right one. My grandmother used to describe how lovely she thought they were when she visited Nepal and Afghanistan in the late 70’s, and now Sticks is looking for just the right opportunity to use it in his music.

ooh, that's cool...I need a singing bowl...it might flirt with my air conditioner though and then I'd be jealous!
  • I want one! That's really beautiful. I'm with Denise.... good luck keeping that away from Sticks. LOL! I have a hard enough time keeping my own instruments away from my sons (they each keep trying to steal my classical guitar), nevermind any that belong to them in the first place.
  • That's not weird - everyone has a singing bowl, don't they?

My darn children somehow remembered that "my drum" is really Christopher's drum that I was keeping safe for him til he was older. He's older now and seems interested in taking it back. Good luck at keeping Sticks' bowl safe for him!
