Today was a very interesting day. I went out around 5pm to watch the herons and see if I could get some photos of the chicks poking their heads up, but I got a wonderful show instead. I’m not sure exactly what was going on, but there were 5 adult herons instead of the usual 2, in addition to the chicks. They weren’t just sitting quietly on the tree branches either. For the better part of an hour they were bumping each other off of branches, chasing each other out of the tree, squawking and awking and generally raising the roof!
I filled a 1GB card — I shoot my photos in RAW format so that equates to about 180 photos. Because the light was very tricky, the exposures and white balance are off. Things were moving so fast that I couldn’t make the adjustments fast enough. I really should’ve had the video camera instead of the still camera, but it just means some adjustments in Photoshop. Here’s a preview: I suggest clicking on the photo for a larger view, because the 500px size just isn’t going to give you the full impact of what it was like to see five HUGE birds flying around while babies are poking their heads out watching.

Only 1GB? It would take me a zillion gigabytes to capture such wonderful beauty! Your pictures always remind me of the wonders upon this earth.
