It’s a big weekend here in the ‘odd-time’ house.
Sticks and T are off to Reno, where Sticks will be competing/playing at the Reno Jazz Festival, one of the granddaddy festivals of them all. This is HUGE for Sticks — it’s been a goal of his for three years, and he’s playing some fun stuff. On drumset, he’ll be be-bopping to a Sonny Stitt piece called The Eternal Triangle (once performed by Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt, for you jazzies…) for the competition. He’ll back up the other drumset player on percussion for their other numbers (something he does really well even if I AM prejudiced).
Hmmmm, I’ve sent my son off to Las Vegas and Reno for performances in the past month. Next it’ll be Branson. Atlantic City?
Actually, no. He and T will fly back Saturday afternoon so that he can rise bright and early Sunday morning to travel to Fontana to compete in the Drumline Championships. They’ve consistently placed 4th in all of their normal season performances, so they’ve got a definite shot at the top three and a medal.
I wish I could be in two places at once.
At the very same exact time that Sticks is competing in Reno, Dancergirl will be in Costa Mesa vying for that magic “second first”. I will be the support team, there to hold the dress, pin the wig, hold onto the iPod, refill the water bottle, and give all the encouragement I can.
I hope when we all arrive back home Sunday they’re both happy with their performance and their placement, and are inspired and motivated by the level of competition in all venues.
I also hope when we all arrive back home Sunday T and I have survived to tell the tale! Probably the most blogging I’ll get to is a Flickr upload of mobile phone photos…but I am taking the laptop, so maybe more.
Have a wonderful weekend!
