Change is in the air…

Best wishes to Robert and Maryam Scoble on Robert’s new venture vblogging for Podtech.net.

It’s a time for change, and from the look on Maryam’s face, it’s all good for the Scobles! I’m glad they’ll be closer to Patrick, because these years we have with our kids are so short and then they’re independent. Even though they come (or call) home, it’s never the same.

Change is in the air for us, too. On Friday, T was informed that his largest client is moving her account, not because of anything he did or didn’t do, but more because she tends to be someone who makes decisions rapidly and then carries them out, for better or worse. Because of confidentiality I can’t share all of the back story on it, but T actually had her husband as a client. When he passed away, she stayed with T, but she is about to remarry and that precipitated the change. It’s not unusual, but we have yet to see a widow who remarries and keeps her account with him. We also have yet to see them do better with someone else, but it’s their decision and our job to respect it.

What it means to us today is a loss of half of the income he derives from that aspect of his business. Suffice it to say it’s a huge chunk of money. Strangely enough, while we’re a bit unsure of how we will replace it, neither of us doubt that we will, one way or the other. This is the part of being self-employed that is so icky — that knowledge that the loss of one or two clients can mess up your whole year and then some, particularly when both of us are fee-based and self-employed.

I’m hoping T will be able to make more money with his video talents and equipment. He’s really very good — he has a great sense of timing and story and has spent the last year in self-tutorials on editing, storyboarding and other video lessons. I’d love to see him start vblogging or being hired to do wedding videos and the like (being a minister has some benefits — he knows the flow of weddings like the back of his hand).

Whatever the outcome, it will mean belt-tightening and heavy focus on our budget for the next several months, but we have faith that opportunities will be provided. God is good. :)

  • Change comes in all sorts of ways, doesn't it? And sometimes need can send us off on more creative and fulfilling paths. I hope that's the case for T. Good luck with that belt-tightening. Been there too often myself.
