Summertime…and the livin’ is…

HOT.

Really hot. Going to Blogher? Plan on HOT; hope for cool.

I spent my weekend in San Jose at the Hyatt where Blogher will be. Dancergirl had a competition this weekend which I managed to completely screw up (don’t miss her post on this…it’s HYSTERICAL)…I entered her correctly and read the schedule incorrectly. At the exact time I was LEAVING for San Jose, she was supposed to be DANCING. Fortunately the committee allowed her to compete in the next age group up from her own and she placed seventh, so it all worked out anyway. In fact, it worked out better than expected — she did a great job and held her own against girls a full year ahead of her at an age where physical development is all over the place. Her comment: “I felt like a shrimp next to those girls!”

But dang. The drive up there was miserable; the drive back worse. Traffic was jammed leaving San Jose this morning on the 101 South because of a nasty accident, so I was stuck going up a steep grade with no A/C (old cars don’t like sitting in traffic with the A/C running). Driving through the Salinas valley was akin to driving through the ninth circle of hell. When we finally hit the coast at Pismo Beach we couldn’t wait to get out of the car and down to the beach. It was beautiful, but HOT. Reminded me of Maui in mid-August. The only relief was standing in the surf and letting the waves wash over our feet. We got great pictures, played and had a lot of fun, but…we’re not used to two-plus weeks of 100-degree-plus heat, with lots of humidity to boot.

Coming back to Camarillo after fighting our way through Santa Barbara was like arriving in paradise, and it was still about 85 degrees here. We were so glad to be back, but I’m catching up on the blog after being up since 5:30 this morning because it’s still too hot in the house to sleep. Air conditioning is not something required in Camarillo homes, and we don’t have any.

I can’t believe I’ll be doing that drive again in 4 days. I’m hoping it won’t be quite as bad later in the week…the weather guys are promising a little bit of a break, but plan on bringing that bathing suit, drinking lots of water and dressing for the heat with a light jacket if you’re planning on heading up to San Francisco or out to Monterey/Big Sur.

Oh, and another victim of the heat was my web host. LA had a power outage yesterday that took down a bunch of their sites, including all five that I have hosted with them, and so we were out of commission until very early this morning when they finished their diagnostics and brought everything back up. (It took MySpace completely out, too) So much for redundant arrays and all that — if they’re all located in the area of the outage we’re just hosed.

  • Hmmm at the heat. That is interesting. They're always too cold, ya know?

This was good info, thanks very much. See ya tomorrow!
  • Denise, the Hyatt was very nice. Don't worry about the bathrooms -- there were a zillion Irish dancers there and no bathroom lines, nice and clean always. The lobby has lots of space and spills outdoors too, and the Internet connection is ubiquitous. No worries at all there. You can find a connection no matter where you are.

The only thing that I thought was a bit of a bummer was that the meeting rooms were HOT, but that may have been more a function of the unseasonably hot weather and drain on the A/C system. If the weather goes back to normal the meeting rooms should be nice and comfortable.

Donna, the whole scheduling thing has me nuts! I want to scream because I've managed to turn things upside down too many times lately. I'm looking forward to seeing you later in the week!

Liz...the competition was at 8AM -- I wouldn't do that to anyone who didn't HAVE to be there. :)

Darn, I woulda come down to watch....Sunday, anyway.
  • That scheduling thing is my nightmare -- I am forever doing things like that. I hate it when something my daughter wants to do is screwed up because *I* didn't get the facts right.

The more I hear about Dancergirl, the more I like her (I guess because she sounds a lot like my little gymnast).

I'm sorry you have to make the same trip again so soon... but the experience should be TOTALLY different! (Except for the heat and the traffic :sigh:)
  • So. How was the Hyatt? Big rooms? Internet connection good? Staff friendly? Clean? Did you by chance notice the lobby and meeting room bathrooms - will there be enough for a zillion women, some of whom have TUMMY TROUBLES?

Glad dancergirl did so well with the big girls, that's a very good thing.
