DOPA: A Parallel Study

Posted by Karoli in Politics August 4th, 2006

Proponents of DOPA claim that by banning social networking sites from public schools, they are protecting our children from harm. The DOPA wiki has more details and excellent links to information about this law and why it should be repealed, as does Nancy White’s call to action. Let’s see if we can apply their logic to a real-life situation which is at least as tragic as those incidents which sparked a call for this wrong-headed law.

We have a situation here in California.

A substitute elementary school teacher was charged Friday with lewd and lascivious acts involving a 10-year-old girl, and police said he claimed to have molested more than 100 students.

Police said his resume shows that he has taught in different school districts throughout San Bernardino, Riverside and Kern counties.

This is outrageous. Truly, no sarcasm here. Over the past three years, a substitute teacher has possibly molested over 100 children on the premises of our public schools. How can this happen?

It’s obvious that we need to do a better job of protecting our children. Hundreds of substitute teachers pass through our public schools every day, possibly putting our children at risk right under our very noses.

A law is necessary to protect these children from these predators. Our public schools are funded with Federal funds. Therefore, we must write our United States Senators and Congressmen at once and demand that they draft and pass a law to protect our children from these horrible predators. Effective sooner rather than later, they must pass a law that:

a) Bans all substitute teachers from public schools and public educational facilities
b) Penalizes any public school which fails to comply with the ban by revoking all Federal funding from said school

Write your congressman today. Stress how important it is that they protect the children. Do not let our schools become a stalking ground for predatory substitute teachers. Remember, our tax dollars should not be spent encouraging those nasty substitutes to prey on our innocent children.

Whatever we do, it must be done now. School is starting. Our children are at risk. Hurry.

Disclaimer: Obviously there is sarcasm in the solution, but not in my deep concern about the utter lack of understanding our legislators have about what it really means to protect our children from predators. How could a substitute teacher molest so many young girls in such a short time? Why isn’t there outrage about that — so much outrage that the screening laws already on the books are enforced and protections put into place to really protect our kids?
