An Alternative Cure for ADHD

This turned up on digg.com tonight as a tongue-in-cheek look at the “old school cure” for ADHD. A funny line (and spoiler) at the end:

“Please send away for this free brochure, entitled, ‘You Can Either Calm Down, Or I Can Pop You In The Mouth Again’. Thank you.”

The video is funny for sure, but what really interested me were some of the comments to the original post.

Don’t miss them. I’ll have more to say about this when I describe some of the techniques used to keep my ADHD in check in later posts, but these comments really paint a picture of the ongoing conflict between ignorance, experience, and education about ADHD.

I just left a comment on the digg thread. I was so furious reading all of the comments from people who thought that smacking a kid was really an alternative. I was shocked at the ignorance of most of the people on that thread. Thanks for pointing it out. I'm interested to hear what you have to say.

I have two kids, one with ADHD, both are teens and I have never laid a hand on either of them. They are both loving, resepctful and well behaved. They are not perfect by any means, but they wouldn't be any better off if I had hit them to prove my power over them. I parent thought respect, not violence.

That being said, I do have a sense of humor and I thought the clip was funny. A bit of commic releif for a tough subject.

    Hi Kris --

I saw your comments over there...well said. The comments were really interesting, weren't they? A blend of utter ignorance, learned experience, and plain outright nastiness.

The sad thing is that they're probably representative of what people really think.

I'm working on those entries...they're a little painful to write, actually. But this much I can say -- we have not hit our kids either nor do we think it's the right way to approach discipline. There is an incredibly mixed message to use spanking and hitting to get across behavior expectations to kids and then turn around and tell them that if they hit others they'll have consequences. Classic do as I say, not as I do.

    Thanks for stopping by!
