Blog Day

by Karoli on August 31, 2006

Yep, late again, but it’s still August 31st and so I get to play anyway. Today is World Blog Day. The idea behind Blog Day is to choose 5 other blogs that aren’t like your own, give a brief description and link to them. It was really, really hard to pick five. I read so many blogs that aren’t a thing like mine and deal with so many topics that are different that I had a lot of trouble deciding. So these five blogs are recent discoveries that made me sit up and say “Where have I been????”. If they interest you, subscribe. Tell ‘em drumsnwhistles sent you. :)

Cool Cat Teacher – I discovered Cool Cat Teacher via Blogher, I think — just this week. She blogs about teaching and technology and I really, really wish she was Dancergirl’s teacher. Or mine. Or yours. Read her blog, you’ll see what I mean.

apophenia is Danah Boyd’s amazing blog. Actually, Danah Boyd is amazing. If you’re interested in social media and research surrounding how the Internet is used and used specifically by teens, you’ll do what I did and read through her archives after you subscribe to her blog. Oh, and I really want her chumby, too.

Drama Queen’s Momma
is one I found as a result of Blog Day. She’s a smart, funny, cool writer. All the posts I read today just made me say “Yeah! You nailed it!”. Her blog is clearly a mommy blog, but mommy or not, you’ll get a hoot out of how she writes about daily life with such a twisty sense of humor.

I found Kristine over at Random and Odd by way of Lee. The funny part was that I’d already added her as a Flickr contact before I started reading her blog — her photos are awesome. Even more awesome is her blunt honesty as she navigates her way through a blended family, new marriage, and struggle with anxiety after a car accident. She approaches everything with a matter-of-fact-I-can-handle-this attitude but sometimes falters and isn’t afraid to say so. Go read — she’s great.

Sassymonkey is Blogher’s new contributing editor for book reviews. She’s also commented here often. You’ve just gotta love a site described as “word vomit littered with mass misuse of punctuation (and occasionally vocabulary) and a parenthentical addiction”. See if you can come up with Reason 1457 for her not having kids and leave her a comment or two. While you’re there, don’t miss her recent terrific advice to new college students (there’s language in case that bugs you).

I’m sorry, but I just can’t stop at five. There’s a few others worthy of a link and mention.

If you like pretty pictures, especially of beaches, then you need to pay a visit to Photofool’s photoblog. If you like Photoshop tutorials and podcasts, then give Jan Kabili’s Photoshop Online Video Podcast a whirl (though I wish she did an audio cast of it too, because my iPod doesn’t have video). Another fun photoblog is Tamela Wolff Photography. Her photos are great, but Tami is a food writer and chef, too and her cheftami blog has some really delicious recipes. And finally, in a completely different vein, The Education Wonks is a wonderful resource to read about quirks, trends, and issues in education.

Have fun! I’ve discovered some terrific new blogs today. I hope you do, too.

  • LOL, sassymonkey! I'm not sure it was YOU -- I'm not afraid of bugs but The Pug is -- and if she can't eat them, she hides.

Tonya and Kristine -- the pleasure was all mine. :)
  • Awww, thank you for your words! They truly mean a lot!!

And exactly what Tonya said!!! :)
  • Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I am so flattered that you chose me as one of your five picks.
  • I'm totally serious. If I can make a cat be scared of bugs can you imagine what I'd do to a child? Can you imagine all the therapy????
