Steve Irwin

I was working on tweaking the blog look and feel tonight when my attention was torn away by a quickie announcement on CBS that Steve Irwin (The Crocodile Hunter) died as a result of an apparent stingray barb to the heart tonight.

My kids have been huge fans of his since they were little. The Discovery Channel and Animal Planet are one of those “always on” channels for everyone, not just the kids. Despite the controversy he attracted, he did a wonderful job of engaging children and adults in the process of understanding and respecting nature.

My heart goes out to his wife and kids — they’re much too young to have lost him.

I’m ridiculously sad over his death. I mean, I never met the man outside of the TV tube, but like you, I watched hundreds of hours of Crocodile Hunter with JumperGirl. I echo your condolences to his family.

It’s a very sad day for us all here. And so bizarre…Stingrays are not aggressive creatures unless they feel threatened, and circumstances just converged very weirdly.
