I just have a whole bunch of mish-mash tonight…but it’s so bizarre that it deserves more than just a del.icio.us link.
In the HUH? department:
- (Washington Post)For Math Students, Self-Esteem Might Not Equal High Scores, or an alternate title might be “Bad Science meets Bad Statistics, marries and becomes Bad Psychology”.
- Also from the Washington post, a report of an analysis of how schools deal with parents under NCLB - Badly, overall. No lie. Just ask Liz (Badgermama).
- In the “more bad science = bad psychology” department, we have this offering, via EditorMom: A Cornell University study which concludes that there is “a statistically significant relationship between autism rates and television watching by children under the age of 3″. I agree with EditorMom. Watch and you’ll see another study that concludes exactly opposite. They seem to be ignoring the genetic link entirely.
From the “Give up the Starbucks before it kills you” department:
Ruth Whalen attributes ADHD, Schizophrenia and “toxic dementia” to caffeine allergies.
Over in the “If You Don’t Like the Score, Change It” department, the special of the day is school administrators correcting average SAT scores for their 2006 graduates. Image is everything, after all.
From the “Creative Ways to Skin a Cat” department, with a slight crossover to the “No Really, It’s True!” area:
Scientologists could find themselves being “relabeled” by the FDA.
A citizen petition currently before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Docket No. 2006P-0390), if approved, would result in a redesign of Scientology’s “packaging” to include a label warning practitioners of the proven hazard that the practice of Scientology poses to their physical, mental, and financial health.

(Bet you didn’t think I could get all those topics in one short post…Ha!)
