Noise distraction is a bane, particularly in our house, where no room is sacred, Sticks is practicing whenever he’s home, there’s always a TV on in the background, and it’s generally chaotic. In the office it’s no better, because I have ‘rabbit ears’ that pick up voices, sounds, and conversation. Our next-door neighbor is a dentist, so I hear all sorts of sounds, mostly unpleasant.
My iPod has been my solution. Or iTunes, depending on whether I’m working on the computer or working on paperwork. I’ll crank up a little Mingus or Miles and my productivity curve spikes.
Slashdot had a blurb today on Chatterblocker, a downloadable program that is supposed to neutralize external noise. They have a downloadable demo that I haven’t tried yet, but they claim to base their approach on scientific evidence.
My iTunes approach seems to work well so I’m not sure I’ll try this. If anyone out there has any feedback on it, I’d love to hear. I’m all for a reasonably priced solution for ADHD abeyance.
