A Whole School Reads

by Karoli on October 26, 2006

Scott Westerfeld is the author of Pretties, Uglies and Specials, YA books that Dancergirl read over the summer. So did I. They are imaginative, set in the future but have enough roots in today to feel real, have very cool gadgets, and an interesting social structure all rolled into three books. There are some aspects of the plot, particularly in the second book that I wish he’d left out (concerning cutting and self-harm presented in a way that could be easily misconstrued by teens reading the books), but overall they’re some of the most creative YA books I’ve put my hands on.

His blog is here. He has an interesting entry today about a school that decided to read, as a school, Uglies and organized a One School/One Book Project around it, complete with a cake, a hoverboard, games, and art projects. What a terrific and fun idea!

Here’s his question: If your school (or your child’s school) did a one-book project, what would you nominate as the book?
