Portland Suggestions?

Dancergirl and I are off to Portland next week for the Western Regional Irish Dance Championships, the qualifying competition for Worlds and Nationals (she’s pre-qualified this year for Nationals because she’s in Open, but this is the event that qualified her last year).

We’ve decided we don’t want to do the usual flying routine, so we’re taking the Coast Starlight — a 27-hour train ride, but with sleeping accomodations. We think it’ll be an adventure — the Coast Starlight is a very cool Amtrak route with lots of photo opps along the way. Depending on what kind of connections we can make, we’re going to try to live blog the trip with photos, video and blog entries.

Our time in Portland will be somewhat limited, but we’ll have some spare time, so I’m looking for any recommendations you all have for restaurants, places to go, things to see. We’re staying at the Doubletree (Lloyd Center).

All suggestions are welcome.

I would definitely do a little tax free shopping and where you are staying is the Lloyd Center mall area so it is perfect. If only it was June and you could see the Rose Festival. For restaurants it depends on the kind of food that you like? I really like the Reinlander German Restaurant it is awesome. I just received the Portland Monthly magazine and they have a whole list of restaurants in there with descriptions, ratings and locations of the restaurants in Porland. I really love it there I am sure you will have a good time. Send me a flickr email if you want anymore suggestions.

Got to Powell’s bookstore. A city block in size, with used paperbacks next to leather bound brand new hardcovers of the same book. It’s been years since we were there but it stood out. Plus it may be too late but there was some very good rose gardens, not sure where… And take a trolly ride downtown.
