…Dancergirl ‘almost’ met her goal of making top 20 or higher, but the competition was huge and 27th of 81 is still great. At least, as far as I’m concerned, it is, but she was disappointed and is now pushing me to do Nationals in Ottawa — something I’d hoped NOT to do.
…Sticks’ marching band made an amazing comeback after a dismal first competition and ‘almost’ made championships — they were squeezed out by .70 of a point…but still won first in all categories at their last competition on Saturday. The backstory here is that they have a brand-new band director and Sticks’ awesome drumline all abandoned ship for cross-country track with two exceptions. He has worked for hours every day with the freshmen that replaced them, and the drumline and percussion won 1st at ‘almost’ all of their competitions — they were 2nd at the first one. Kudos to Sticks for whipping a ragtag group of kids into champions.
…AOL ‘almost’ had a good thing when they brought in Jason Calacanis a year ago with their Weblogs, Inc. acquisition, but true to form, they blew it by replacing the captain of the ship with more ‘traditional’ media guys. I may not agree with him, and may not always like the way he expresses himself, but Calacanis is really a very good businessman with some vision that AOL (once again) failed to see. They wrecked CNN Interactive once and it looks like they’re committed to only one thing: stepping on their own necks. Too bad, but typical. Best wishes to Calacanis on whatever new venture he undertakes.
We’re finally back from Portland — the train was AMAZING. More on that in a different post.
