Old Locomotive

Old Locomotive

On the way back from Portland I noticed this old steam locomotive behind a fence in the trainyard (possibly in Sacramento, but I don’t recall). I have a photo my dad took in the 40s of his trip on the Coast Starlight from LA to Santa Barbara and the locomotive was just like this one. I haven’t found it yet, but it’s one of his best. If I find it, I’ll scan and post it.

I’ve got lots more photos to post of our trip up there — and if any of you are travelling during the holidays and don’t feel like fighting airports, try Amtrak. Add a day or two on either side and have a nice relaxing holiday. Can you imagine how cool it would be to have been on the train to Seattle today? All that snow, just falling around the train, hearing the whistle and nothing more, and knowing that you didn’t have the hassle of driving in it, just the experience of being in it. (No, Amtrak did NOT pay me for this post).

  • Yep, you're right -- it was Salinas. There were so many stops it was hard to keep track, but Salinas rings the right bell.
