Mocha Momma’s Comma

by Karoli on December 22, 2006

Mocha Momma’s efforts to help three really deserving kids have a wonderful Christmas have grown — this morning she reported that the total given now includes a comma.

There is no shortage of people in need or charities seeking donations this holiday. Some might be critical of the effort to help specific people when the same money could go to a charity that helps more, but I see value in both approaches. When I shouted out for ways to help Jules the response was overwhelming. Truly, the internet is full of wonderful people who really do want to help others. Jules will be back online soon as a result of everyone’s generosity. Sometimes, knowing the person you are helping makes the act of giving a much more personal, and often sacrificial act of lovingkindness.

The outpouring of love, resources, time and effort toward Mocha’s kids and Jules really does highlight the best of community on and off the Internet. If one person can make one other person’s life a little better through a small sacrifice and the Internet facilitates that, it is operating at its best and highest purpose. Acts like this cancel out the trolls, spammers, flamers, liars and thieves that lurk in every society, whether virtual or not.

Having the ability to help others is the best gift I’ve had this year. I mean to make it a priority in the coming year, too and invite you to contribute to commas wherever you see an opportunity that calls out to you. Maybe 2007 will be the year that Nancy White’sCulture of Love‘ springs into being as a force.

Or maybe it already has.
