The CES coverage is ubiquitous, so when CNN Pipeline popped up with Steve Jobs’ MacWorld address, I decided to watch.
Ooooh, they’ve got a sexy new iPhone….
- A new iPod with touch screen technology built in, which widens the screen. Deeper resolution, beautiful colors, very sexy.
- The iPhone (looks like it’s going to be with Cingular) running on OS X, looks like it integrates nicely with existing contact lists. What I’ve seen that I like the most on this is the Visual Voice Mail — seeing a list of the Voice Mails and choosing which to listen to first, instead of having to go in sequence. The touch screen technology is very nice for dialing and looking up contacts.
- The SMS messaging is very nice, too — multiple conversations can be done at once. It’s pretty funny to watch jobs peck out “sounds great, see ya there on the touch keyboard. LOL. Looks like text messaging is still painfully slow, but Twitter addicts ought to enjoy it.
- Photo app seems nice — zooming with touch/slide, nice resolution, nice color to view the photos taken with the built-in 2MP camera.
- Rich text/HTML email
- Safari browser built-in. (Hmmm.)
- Google Maps, widgets, EDGE and wifi autoswap
- Partnership with Yahoo to provide push email to iPhone users — comparable to BlackBerry — THIS is very, very cool.
The Apple Store is down for maintenance (ostensibly to put up these new products), but when it’s back I’ll find a graphic. Depending on what the initial reviews are, this phone could be huge.
Ugh, CNN Pipeline just dumped the signal and is working to get it back. SIGH. Evidently the iPhone also has some Internet capabilities for the EDGE network — it’s quadraband GSM. Very, very cool.
When I went looking for a mobile phone back in August, I couldn’t find one that did everything I wanted well. Either it did the Internet/email stuff well or it did the phone stuff well. So I went ahead with the free Razr upgrade, figuring I’d wait to see what came out this year.
This is definitely more interesting than I thought it would be. I shrugged at the iPhone rumors, but it’s really nice. They ship in June (long way off) for $499 (4GB) and $599 (8GB) with a 2-year Cingular contract.
Update: How interesting to see them integrate Google Maps and Yahoo! Mail and Search into the phone…an interesting marriage.
