Facing Reality: Ugh

by Karoli on February 5, 2007

IU MAC bannerSticks and Bigdog have returned triumphant from Indiana. Evidently the audition went very, very well and props are owed (big time) to his wonderful percussion teacher Tina Curtis for getting him up to speed on the snare and mallet solos and Gregg Bissonette for the drumset tips — from all accounts his performance was impressive. Next week he’s off to Texas for the UNT audition.

It’s sinking in waaaay too fast that he’ll be gone in six months or so. No matter where he goes, it won’t be here. sticks' photo My head has told me that for a long time, but now my heart is telling me that, too, and I hate it. I hated it when the Eldest went off to the Army, too…but this one is bothering me more. Maybe because he seems so much younger than the Eldest did — so much less independent. Maybe because I will miss savoring his performances, particularly if he’s out of state.

IU, not blind to this fact, spent much time this weekend reassuring parents that the kids in music majors are so busy studying, practicing and performing that they don’t have time to get in trouble. It’s not trouble that I’m afraid of, it’s my own loss of someone I like being around.

Ugh, it’s late and I’m maudlin. I’m sure it’ll be fine, but this is one reality I am not liking at all.

  • Thanks, Donna. There is that possibility. But honestly...the best schools are the two that are out of state. :(
  • That is such a tough one. I hope he ends up someplace close.
