This gull fought with another one for the right to this starfish. It finally chased away all of its rivals and then grabbed the treasure, intending to head off somewhere away from the pounding surf to savor it.
But it was too heavy for one gull to carry. I took this photo just after it had recovered it for the second time just in time for a wave to come in fast. It had no choice but to grab the prize and jump out of the way of the rolling surf, which proved to be an impossible task. Just after I took this, the gull dropped the starfish back into the ocean where it was carried away by the second wave behind this one forever.
There’s an object lesson in there somewhere.
