Amero Post Update

by Karoli on February 25, 2007

The original .ZIP file that I linked in my previous post was huge because it was uploaded as an image PDF by the newspaper.  I ran OCR on it and saved them in date order as text/image files.  Here is the download link:  amero-text.zip Right-click to save it to your hard drive. (I’ve removed the references to my earlier posted file)

I also wanted to point out this post which is factually incorrect and written by someone who definitely has a weird agenda. I posted a comment but comments are moderated, so there’s no assurance that it will be published, which is the only reason I’m linking it here. Specifically, the errors in the post concern the claim that she has been sentenced to 40 years and begins serving that sentence on March 2nd.

Julie is taking the fall, but many other people failed before a porn storm burst into that classroom.

The IT department failed to keep content filters and anti-malware software up-to-date. The school failed to enforce a security policy, allowing substitute teachers to use regular teachers’ network credentials to access the internet. The administration failed to ensure that all teachers, including substitutes, had the necessary skills and training to handle internet surprises — and the savvy to respond quickly in a crisis.

And the community fails to Protect The Children in the example it’s setting. What should have been a wake-up call for the district employment office — and for IT — has spiraled embarrassingly out of control.

and this:

We fail to Protect The Children when we react with fear and hate to the challenges inherent to interactive media, rather than accepting them and figuring out common-sense ways to deal.

We do students a disservice when we provide them with teachers who aren’t equipped with the skills to incorporate computers and the internet into education. A teacher who doesn’t know how to close a browser gone wild probably should not have internet access in the classroom.

Also, for an illustration of what a porn storm looks like, see this article on benedelman.org. Also, American Public Radio had an interview with Alex Eckelberry and W. Herbert Horner which you can download or listen to online.

Finally, on Friday Sticks came home telling me a story of how his good friend who also happens to be quite computer-savvy and a bit of a ‘harmless hacker’ (I’ll tell you what that is when I know), hacked into the district mainframe through the school’s Internet access. I asked Sticks what operating system and browser they were using. You guessed it: Windows 98 with Internet Explorer 5. Their content filters are turned on, though, because it took moving heaven and earth to get our band website approved and I can’t use Flickr on the site because it’s blocked, which I guess is a good thing. Still, this kid was able to get to the district mainframe and download everyone’s semester grades.

Glad to know IT Security is so locked down in ye olde school district, eh?

    Karoli,
Can you contact me offline regarding the OCR version of of the transcript?

    Thanks
  • WEHooper,

I've fixed the link (my bad!!!) and it should download as a zip file for you now.

Let me know if you have any more troubles with it.

Had problems with the text file. File downloaded not as a .zip, but as amero-text.pdf. It would not open with WinZip and would not open as a PDF. It would be nice to have a searchable text version of the transcript. Thanks!

I've only just looked at the barest of information on the Amero case, but what it looks like to me on first blush is
that Ms. Amero rolled legal snake eyes... getting a bad judge, a bad jury, and a prosecution "expert" who seems much
more likely utterly clueless than dishonest.

That said, I can tell you from a recent case of mine how hard it can be to get concepts we think are simple across to the
uninitiated. I had a recent judge-only trial where, through a witness, I had to ensure that the Court understood the basics
of Yahoo chat and webcam transmission. The judge got it -- but the other three lawyers in the case were utterly lost.
These are lawyers I've known for 20 years or more. They are intelligent, educated counsel. However, one has never been
online and dictates his letters, while the other two barely understand E-mail. Keeping that in mind, I think it is not too
hard to see how a jury, particularly one deprived of expert opinion via suppression, could misunderstand the
concepts (legal *and* technical) involved in the case.

It seems that there are some good appellate arguments here. Let's hope that's the case.
  • Hi, I updated the information on Julie Amero's sentencing date and linked to your site to let readers hear your viewpoint.

The reason I moderate my comments is because a right-wing nutcase and Sailer supporter kept inundating the site with frivolous comments amounting to spam, which included spam itself like discount drungs and low home mortgage rates.
