Blogher Ads

by Karoli on October 20, 2007

If you read this blog with your RSS reader, you may not know that I’ve joined the Blogher Ad Network.  In the past, I’ve had an aversion to running ads on this blog, but when I saw the Blogher ads I changed my mind.  Here’s why:

  1. The ads on the network are either for solid products or for charities I believe in. As I write this, there’s a Habitat for Humanity ad on the right sidebar. I like and support Habitat for Humanity and welcome their ad to the site.
  2. Many of the ads Blogher runs are for free samples. Who doesn’t want free samples?
  3. Every ad has text links back to recent blog posts by other Blogher bloggers.

That last point is the most important one.  I really, really like the idea of being part of a large network where yes, there’s an ad, but there’s also the opportunity to discover other bloggers and be discovered.  This is a unique feature — I’ve not seen it in any other ad network and I really, really like it.

Because I like this concept so much, I contemplated the possibility of changing to a partial RSS feed, but I can’t bring myself to do it.  I like full feeds and it annoys me when I have to click through to read a blog post, no matter how much I want to read it.  So I’ll keep the full feeds, but I’d really appreciate it if you’d visit the blog once in awhile and if the ad doesn’t interest you, consider clicking on one of the blog posts linked underneath to discover a fresh, new voice to spice up your day.

BlogHer is pretty impressive when you stop and think about it.  In barely 2 years they’ve built a network of nearly 1000 bloggers  and reported yesterday that they have over 4 million unique visitors per month between the BlogHer site and all of the affiliates.  That’s impressive, but the good that is being done through BlogHer is even more impressive.

  • Thanks, Denise. I like the "more from BlogHer" feature more than I thought I would...what would be really cool is a "More from Blogher" widget that I could drop into my sidebar or RSS feed. :)
  • I'm so impressed with the people behind the BlogHer Ad Network. They work hard to bring good ads and get good links into that "More from BlogHer" thing.

And, on BlogHer.com we've started adding some of those "More from BlogHer" links on the sidebar and I hope we'll be doing more of those types of things on the main site.

Good post, KK. Glad you joined.
