Chumby is Here!

I made myself promise I wouldn’t play with it till I got some work done that has a pressing deadline to it and I’ve (more or less) kept that promise. More or less.

Okay, I did go to the Chumby website and pick some widgets. And maybe I turned him on for just a second and set him up.

And…maybe I took him to the office with me and tried to figure out if he would connect to my computer via an ad hoc wireless connection since we have wired Internet in the office. I might’ve spent a wee bit too much time on that.

And…maybe I plugged in my iPod to see how my music played, too.

But I DIDN’T PLAY WITH IT.

Sticks rolled in while I was not playing but setting it up and asked me what it does. DG (aka katinthehat) came downstairs and said “how cute! What does it do?”

I didn’t really have an answer for them. I told them I’d let them know after I’d had a chance to play with it.

Which I haven’t done. Aren’t you proud of me?

From the Wikipedia, “Chumby relies on a modified BitTorrent client to upgrade the open-source portions of its firmware.” Considering the security problems with other BitTorrent clients such as Limewire, you had better check out their security measures. A simple mp5 hash of the final complete download, downloadable from their secure server only, would probably suffice.
