Clash of the Choirs – Lachey vs. LaBelle

by Karoli on December 20, 2007 · 13 comments

Patti LaBelle was robbed, pure and simple. Nick Lachey’s choir was fantastic, no doubt, but they didn’t have the same heart and…dare I say it…soul that Patti’s group did, not to mention amazing, inspiring, incredible soloists. Proof? Backing a superstar diva like Patti LaBelle would send most singers to the back corner to be ignored in favor of the amazing LaBelle, but they held their own and were as much a part of that performance as she was. That choir gave me chills every time they sang.

Also, a note to the producers — Quit taking a show that could easily have been an hour each night and stretching it into two hours. The choirs were loads of fun to watch, but what was the point of the “panel”? And while we’re at it, what was the point of 99% of host Maria’s stupid questions? Those people deserved better than “Who do you want to win?”.

Anyway, congratulations to Nick Lachey, who did a great job of leveraging his own choral background into a win for his charity, and condolences to Patti, who really did deserve the win.

If NBC ever releases clips, don’t miss Lachey’s choir singing “Flight of the Bumblebee” a cappella, or Patti’s choir and Patti singing “Over the Rainbow”. Just amazing.

Still pouting…

    I agree Patti WAS ROBBED!

Are you kidding. Over the Rainbow was good but everyone that has a strong voice sings that song. The first song Patti's choir sang was thier best. The other songs were boring. I don't think her choir was that much better than everyone elses to say she got robbed.

I disagree. Lachey and LaBelle clearly had the most experience with choral music and both chose good music. But Lachey's choir had some intonation problems with soloists, the number they sang with him was lackluster, and their one home run was the Flight of the Bumblebee, which was excellent, no question.

LaBelle's choir was singing some amazingly complex arrangements with tight harmonies and difficult rhythms. Her soloists were the best I've heard in a long time, they should all get record contracts.

It's too bad that Kelly Rowland's team had such a rocky start, because I grew to be very impressed with them as well. I think nerves may have gotten the better of them that first night – she had some incredible soloists, too.

If you were only picking the best choir, it would have been LaBelle's. Unfortunately whenever it's up for the popular vote, whether they're the best choir is only one factor — there's Lachey name recognition, he appeals to a younger demographic who would be more likely to use their cell phones to vote (and their friends' cell phones), and other murkier things.

I'm not begrudging Lachey — he did some great things with his group. But really the best choir was Patti's.

You are correct. I think it could have come down to techincalities such as who had more face time or who sang what types of songs if it were any other competition, if the competition were actually a close call. But it wasn't. When one of the groups leaps headlong over the standard like Patti's team did, causing spontaneous outbursts of laughter and tears like patties team did, it becomes clear that any regular methods of determining irrelevant.

nobody deserves to win, you either you do or you don't — no excuses

Nick had a chorus….patty had the CHOIR…church and all! We knew it was rigged when Team Nick wasnt sent packing the FIRST NIGHT! They were AWFUL! Also…why have three choirs for the finale..should have been two and should have taken overnight voting!

I have a feeling Patty's Choir will be on TOUR with her soon enough to raise money for her charity!

destiny, with all due respect, that made no sense. You can earn a win or you can get it. In my opinion, team Lachey got it, and came close to earning it, but the group that earned it (and deserved it) was Team Labelle.

Morgan, I couldn't agree more. Their performances pulled more emotion out of me in four nights than anything else I've seen in four years.

I hope they do go on tour with Patti — I'd definitely buy tickets to that concert. And the CD, and the DVD, and the iTunes downloads.

You know that Team Nicks choir grew each night. They were a very good choir. The problem with the competition is that they didn't tell us what kind of choir to look for. There is a difference between a gospel choir and a show choir. You must know that Kelly deserved to be the first to leave. Let's get real. Have a Merry Christmas.
