Benazir Bhutto: 1953- 2007

by Karoli on December 27, 2007

Update: Read this post from the All Things Pakistan blog (thanks, Pam at BlogHer!)

I am not an expert in this area, but it is a region of interest to me because of relatives’ ties to the region and I believe Benazir Bhutto’s assassination this morning will go down in history as a world-changing and tragic event.  Whatever else she was, Benazir Bhutto was passionate about restoring Pakistan to democracy.  She overcame her gender to become Prime Minister.  To me, she was a heroine and an incredible leader, though I’m sure the truth is somewhere in the middle.  Rest in peace.

Jazzzi has a great photoset documenting her life on Flickr.  Here’s a Slate article by Christopher Hitchens that’s interesting, too.

For some counterpoint, here is a 1998 NY Times article about the corruption allegations against her.  I do not believe she was any better or worse than most politicians, but she was smart, and she was forcing Pakistan to take a position on the question of where they stood with Al Qaeda, terrorists, and their future.  I haven’t had much respect for President Musharraf over the past few years, mostly because he seems to say whatever is needed at the time but doesn’t really follow through with any of it.

  • "World-changing"? I doubt it. Yes, she was visible and vocal these past few months, but only because she seemed sane in comparison to Musharraf.

The West was hanging its hat on her and that's the source of much of the outrage that has spewed forth today.

Still ignored is the real problem: the funding of extremism. Where is all the money the US is pumping into Pakistan going?
