Photo Challenge, Week 1

Calm Before the Storm

Here’s the challenge: Post one photo per week documenting your community, wherever that may be at that moment in time. Make it your best shot. The rest of the guidelines are here.

On New Year’s Day, DG and I abandoned the men and the house to football games, took our cameras and spent 3 hours at the beach. The sunset was magnificent that day, the sky wispy-clouded and calm. Because there was an offshore wind flow, the water appeared to be flat. Of course, that didn’t last long. With the onset of the west coast storms this week, the waves at Surfer’s Point have ranged in size from 7-14 feet.

Surfer’s Point is just a few miles up the road from our house on the 101. It has long been the surfing spot of choice for the hard-core, old guard surfers. There are still surfers up there who can tell stories about living in their VW vans in the late sixties, surfing, sharing and just hanging. It’s an unusual beach, because the waves come in on the diagonal, so the ride is long and smooth on a good day.

I am facing away from Surfer’s Point, watching DG soak in the sunset just the way I love to do. It was a wonderful way to begin 2008.
