Would 2008 be complete without one more brag post from me with some terrific jazz, courtesy of Sticks and the CSUN A Jazz Band? I don’t think so.
But this concert is especially special, because there were two guests. Gregg Bissonette on drums, and Bernard Fowler on vocals. Because Gregg was playing, Sticks didn’t play drumset, but he played some kickass percussion. My favorite piece is Mira Mira (a Matt Harris composition), complete with perc/drumset trades back and forth in the middle.
The whole concert was awesome. BD videotaped it, but without a tripod and from the audience, so any distortion and ambient noise is due to that — the vocals are a bit buried because he wasn’t able to mix the sound. Hopefully one of these days he’ll get to do something other than a surreptitious and bootleg recording.
Enjoy.

The CSUN Jazz A Band rocks. These recordings really don’t do justice to the quality of their work. If you’re in Southern California when they’re playing, I’d highly recommend going to hear them. (And not just because my kid is in the band, either).
