This is a sure sign that this cold, wet, gray winter is sliding into spring: lilacs blooming on our young tree-lings. They were planted three years ago and bloom every March right on schedule.
The thing about lilacs is that one day there is one small cluster, and the next the entire tree is ablaze with them. Last week it was just this small cluster wrapping around the wooden pole bracing the tree. This week, they are all bursting with purple lilac goodness, a sign that warmer, drier, better days are ahead.
