reflections of one another

reflections of one another

This is part of a set that I took yesterday indoors in afternoon light, called “variations on a rose“.

The rose itself came from a bush at the end of our little row of townhomes, the former home of a friend. Her son used to play with Miss Dancer when they were in elementary school. They were best, best friends, the kind where it didn’t matter that he was a boy and she was a girl, they just got along and couldn’t wait till they could both play whatever the game of the day was.

Their home has been foreclosed on now. It sits vacant and alone. The rosebush in the front was hers, planted by her husband in honor of their marriage and first home together. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hang onto their home, and finances created such stress that the marriage broke, too.

I couldn’t bear to see these wonderful roses wither and die on the bush, so I cut them, took them home, and spent the better part of yesterday afternoon photographing them as a way of capturing at least a bit of color and art from a sad and all-too-frequently-occurring situation.

It’s so hard to watch people I care about, people who are solid, middle class, taxpaying citizens, lose everything because they can’t find another job, or health problems have bankrupted them, or they just plain lose hope. Last night I railed on Twitter about it, and today I took one step toward doing what little bit I could do to help. More about that in the next post.

I hope that if you enjoy my rose, you’ll use it as inspiration to consider doing what you can, whatever small thing it might be, to help someone who is suffering because of this economy or personal problems, or whatever it might be. Were it not for the kindness of those of you who read this blog, I might have felt hopeless about things in December.

We are all reflections of one another, humans trying to get through every day the best way that we can, dealing with what is thrown at us. Imagine a world where we did some small thing to make that reflection brighter, more saturated with color.

Karoli, since I've been following you I have been impressed by your intellect, resourcefulness, wit, fortitude, knowledge and by just how much you do. I am now moved by your compassion and your ability to share that trait in a meaningful way with all of us. So many of us are in circumstances that are testing our survival and it is only through the kindness of friends and family that we do manage to survive. Thanks.

Beautiful, Karoli. In the midst of a depressing time, one-on-one help and empathy may be the only thing that keeps us from despairing.

    Jane and Dinah,

Thanks so much for your comments and encouragement. I appreciate it. I really believe the act of giving is something that is as much for the person who gives as the one who receives. We've lived too long in a 'me' frame of mind, and if we're going to pull ourselves out of where we are now, it's going to be the product of shifting to a 'we' frame of mind, I think.

tre, thank you so much for your kind comment, and I'm so glad you found me (and vice versa) on Twitter. That is one of the wonderful parts of twitter — being able to discover people who are like-minded and use the power of the network for good. I'm so glad you enjoyed the rose image, and look forward to using what I have to make things a little pretter online, and a little better offline. :)

This is perhaps one of the most moving images of a rose i have ever seen and I grew up in the tropics and haven't really appreciate this particular type of flower…odd yes, because i'm a woman and a romantic and very much a soulful mind and heart. your tweets last night moved me much. i wasn't following you directly but i @'d you anyway…and you responded …luv that about twitter. you were moved w/ compassion to help a friend and then acted on that to help who knows how many thru your tweets, photography and now the photoblog as well…this is a time when every more my sense that substance is spiritual and unshakable and that we are each grounded is being proved on a thought by thought basis…hence the title of my blog. mine is not to understand another's journey but to be there to support…however much anyone needs to lean. you are a gift to me simply to hear how you are giving this same gift to so many others. soo grateful to know of you….be well….keep strong…your friends will journey on…they may have lost much stuff….but they are complete within…hold to this….
