Zizek explains this issue about the Left extremely well. It has much to do with not really understanding or wanting the responsibility of power and the comfort of losing. Two books I would recommend by him are Violence, and In Defense of Lost Causes. The latter tackles this in a very deep and thoughtful manner. Violence explains our relationships with, violence.

It's not just twitter. It's pretty pervasive. The narrative is being shaped by the nays. That needs to change. Responding to the incessant nonsense is a human trait...but we need to resist it and shift to one where it isn't all that unusual to actually engage in reasonable debate.

On the rest of your post, I completely agree. :)

Karoli ---

The simplest answer is that you are hearing the din because you choose to. Twitter and your RSS feeds are all opt-in.

You are hearing these other voices because -- in a shining example of your intellectual honesty -- you aren't afraid of hearing opposing viewpoints.

The people I worry about are on the fringes, who live in echo chambers and don't think for themselves. There are many things upon which we'll disagree, but both of our views come out of the process stronger, more disciplined, focused and articulate.

Concentrate on that as a takeaway, and the BS gets easier to ignore.

Have a great weekend!

Well said! Energy goes where attention flows. Time spent complaining about the wacky right is time wasted from positive efforts to make real change like health care reform. We are in power, let's set the agenda and let's make it count.
