The Collins Gesture

This is a video of the presser with Susan Collins and Joe Lieberman on the 15th, after Lieberman forces Democrats into giving in to dumping the public option and Medicare buy-in. The scene is important. GOP leaders have just done their own press conference. Snowe and Collins are not there. Immediately after the GOP leaders are done, Collins appears with Lieberman. Skip Lieberman’s message and go to Collins at about 7 minutes in. She gestures an important message, one that I haven’t heard anyone catch onto in the storm swirling around right now.

If I were a betting type (I’m not), I’d say Senator Collins sent a signal worth paying attention to.

I think it’s up to Reid to really close this deal. I would love to see him do it without Nelson. Nelson is posturing for keeping the House Stupak language at this point.
