If you think social security is wearing us down financial and economically it doesn't come close to what medicare is doing. Its tough to argue for or against medicare knowing that if we do nothing we have an ethical healthcare issue yet if we continue on our path we will be financially devistated. Kind of off topic but had to throw this in.

Thanks for your researched history lesson! Without these perspective-broadening looks back, we feel more alarmed about the workings of our government and its politics. A corrective swing of the pendulum away from unrestricted free-market activity is due, as evidenced by our shameful healthcare inequities and our financial markets meltdown; that's the way of it and no amount of political spin can alter that.

Of interest: The Providence Journal ran a story this morning that RI uninsured is now 140,000, which is 16% of the state population and up 18K since 2008, nearly double since 2000. Now there's a trendline.

As long as there are diametrical differences in outlook, philosophy and opinion, it will repeat itself. Does history prove or disprove the value of Social Security and Medicare? Suggest you ask a few seniors.

As an historian by academic training I always liked the statement attributed to Lilly Tomlin: "Maybe if we listened history would stop repeating itself."

it is crazy, and crazier still to read about the maneuvers they go through to try and stop them. It was at least as ugly as this.
