Spidey Sense

If I were on that Ferris Wheel, I’d want Spiderman nearby. Ferris Wheels terrify me.

Spinal Tap Doesn’t Disappoint; Drummer Survives

Posted by Karoli in Music, Video, Web July 9th, 2007

If you aren’t familiar with the legendary Spinal Tap, you don’t know that they tend to consume (or incinerate) drummers on a regular basis. I’m pleased to report (and Sticks will be pleased as well) that Gregg Bissonette survived the Live Earth performance quite nicely and was incredibly fun to watch. Boo-hiss to MSN for not allowing embedded video into our blogs, but I did find it on YouTube. (Just in case it gets pulled down, here’s the MSN Link). For maximum enjoyment, please go to 11 (note: stupid story linked there). (Backstory)

Also, don’t miss the Foo Fighters. They and Spinal Tap were the best of the UK sets (although I wanted to brush the hair out of Dave Grohl’s face about 60 times). Madonna did the usual bump and grind thing - she was okay, but a letdown after the Foo Fighters, for sure. John Mayer (NY) and Yusuf (Germany) — formerly Cat Stevens…a long-time fave of mine– round out a really nice online concert video experience.

Surprisingly, the MSN Video feed was very stable throughout the day. I thought they might encounter some glitches during peak traffic times but I had no problems with it at all.

Cool Discoveries

The problem with reading the same stuff all the time is that it’s … the same stuff. And right now it’s all iPhone, all the time. I’m sick of reading about it, about the apps, about how pretty it is and how all self-respecting geeks must have one. So I’ve been on the lookout for some cool new blogs to read. And I’ve found some, thanks to Flickr and the 2000 Bloggers project.

Maneeacc (Nafis Azad) is a college student who has been a Flickr contact for awhile — probably a year or so. He’s a “people photographer” — but he also takes pics of musicians which is probably how we originally connected on Flickr. Anyway, he’s doing something that I would have loved to do (and still would). He and 15 others climbed aboard a big yellow bus yesterday and are taking a road trip of the US. Along the way they will be raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. Their blog is here and the Flickr set is here. They’ve had their bus stall a couple of times already, so I hope they make it all the way without too much trouble. (News Article)

Last year I joined the 2000 Bloggers project, which I thought was very cool and which Technorati viewed as gaming the ranking system. I would agree with them if I hadn’t actually found some very, very cool blogs as a result of the project. The latest find is Vanessa Unplugged. Vanessa is another 2K Blogger from Florida. After reading one page of her blog I was hooked, because she’s a thinker and she has a story to tell. I subscribed — I love her writing and her thinking.

What about you all? Any recommendations? Leave a comment with a link so I can update my blogroll, my subscription list and my mind. :)

Tag, I’m it! 8 Random Facts…

Posted by Karoli in Uncategorized June 17th, 2007

Katharine (aka EditorMom) tagged me for the ‘8 random facts about me’ meme, which I promised I’d post over the weekend…times slippin’ by. So here they are:

  1. In another life I was a Civil War re-enactor. I made my own costumes out of historically correct fabrics from historically correct patterns and a couple of the more elaborate ones still hang in the back of my closet.
  2. To this day, I read the Little Women books and the Anne of Green Gables series once a year because they are my most-beloved childhood books. My daughter couldn’t get through the first chapter of Little Women. Go figure. I added To Kill a Mockingbird to the list about ten years ago. No summer goes by without reading those books.
  3. I once aspired to a career in classical music as an oboist.
  4. I cannot stand to even think about touching a cotton ball, much less actually do it. The mere suggestion gives me the chills up and down my spine. UGH. My stepfather used to tease me by leaving one under my pillow when I was out late on a date. Just writing about it is making me shiver…ewwwww.
  5. I was one of the original playtesters for the Dungeons & Dragons game back in the seventies, when Gary Gygax and TSR were doing marketing research. For years I played every week with a group of friends and finally retired my level 38 paladin in 1987. His name was “Live” (evil spelled backwards — not original, but he could kick some major orc, undead and goblin butt. He retired with a silver dragon as his companion.)
  6. I built my first, second and third computers from castoff parts gotten when I upgraded the family computer. I didn’t buy a new computer until 2002 - before that they were self-built.
  7. Red wine gives me horrible tannin headaches but there is nothing quite as divine as a nice dry Chardonnay. Kendall-Jackson is particularly delicious.
  8. I was named the ‘most inspirational’ player on my high school tennis team. This is because I was competitive and an abysmal tennis player all at once. A band/choir geek gone jock isn’t a pretty sight. They felt sorry for me, I think.

And that’s it for my 8 Random Facts. I’ll tell ya what — rather than tagging I’ll leave it to you to decide if you want to share your 8 — post a comment or your own blog post, and I’ll withhold the tags (since I think everyone I read has had this meme hit them at one point or another).
